Affinity Spaces for Informal Science Learning

For the NSF Science Learning+ program, Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) received funding for “Affinity Spaces for Informal Science Learning: Developing a Research Agenda.” With collaborators in the US and the UK, the project is developing a set of concepts, issues and questions that will guide future investigations into how participation in online affinity spaces can promote and enable new approaches to informal science learning. Watch Make: TV Episodes

Make: Television premiered on PBS stations in early 2009. It captured the“Maker Movement,” the DIY trend that was sweeping the country. The The New York Times dubs it “An insurgency of the inventive, the curious and the technologically restless,” and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch calls it “Martha Stewart for supergeeks.” This post presents descriptions of each episode and a link for online viewing.

Recollections on Media and Technology from the 2014 NSF AISL PI Meeting

The 2016 PI meeting took place on February 29th – March 2nd, 2016, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel in North Bethesda, MD.

As the PI community looks forward to reconnecting at the 2016 meeting, it’s useful to look back at the media and educational technology projects that were represented at the 2014 PI meeting. Saul Rockman and Richard Hudson organized an Open Space conversation that brought together a broad spectrum of NSF projects. PIs from over 20 projects contributed to an impressive discussion of the great diversity of media and technology related AISL projects as well as comparable projects supported by other NSF divisions and other funders.

The attached document includes the participants, their AISL project(s) with links, other related projects, and issues they shared in the conversation. Also included are related projects represented at the 2014 PI meeting in the technology domain, but whose PIs were not in this session.

This catalogue of projects is a treasure trove of creativity and innovation, a resource for everyone using media and technology for informal science learning, and a list of who to look for at the 2016 meeting!
